A Kind Ear

For you know who…

Sometimes you need a kind ear,
To listen to the worst of your fears,
One that will hear your self-doubt,
Even when you decide to shout.

An ear that is kind and listens well,
Even when you are feeling like hell,
Allowing you to stop and think,
When your mood is black as ink.

An ear that will make you smile,
Lifting you up many a mile,
To a place that you would rather be,
Then brooding on your own private sea.

The muse struck deep.

Standard Entry, No Images

This is a standand post with out any images. In other words, the "Entry Icon URL" field in the publish page has not been filled in. Normally I would put an image there with a maximum width of 100px as a visual representation of the entry.

The advantage of not using any images or and "Entry Icon" is that you get the most room for doing things that you may not have thought of, say a table:

Rise and Shine

Day First Snooze
Mon: 6:15am 6:30am
Tue: 7:00am 7:30am
Wed: 6:15am 6:30am
Thu: 7:00am 7:30am
Fri: 6:15am 6:30am
Sat: 10:00am 11:am
Sun: 10:00am 11:am

*** Be sure to change the formatting to "none" before adding extensive HTML so the the parsing does not add an extra <br /> after every line. (Find the formatting under the "Body" field to the right, next to smileys). Also, because you have selected no formatting, you will have to do the line breaks yourself. This is the closest you can come to pure HTML in an entry.

So, there are things you can do without going too crazy, as long as you are creative. Also, there are more things that can happen, just check out the next article.

Standard Entry, Inline Image Left

imageHere is a standard entry with a simulated entry icon. To do this, instead of placing the image in the “Entry Icon URL” field, place it in the body field. You will have to know a bit about HTML and tags for this, so that the padding around the image is there. (This is the hspace attribute in the img tag, in this case hspace="8px" to add that little extra space and make it look better.) Also, to get the text to the top of the image, you will need to float the image to the left and that can be done by using the align="left" attribute in the img tag as well.

The other nice thing about this format is that the paragraph text will flow around the image. When the text clears the bottom of the image it will wrap around the image and fill the space. This looks real good and in fact when I archive my own entries in WORD, this is how I do it. It is a nice touch of typography and makes the entry look professional.

Likewise the image on the right is the same except that it is floated to the right and notice that the text flows around both images nicely and looks might professional. (Oh, BTW to get the text and image on the right to not touch, I add the vspace="5" attribute to the img tag.)

The other nice thing about this format is that the paragraph text will flow around the image. When the text clears the bottom of the image it will wrap around the image and fill the space. Standard Entry, Horizontal Image

There are times that you may want to put a horizontal image in an entry. This is ot hard, just place it inline with the text. You may want to consider align="center" and some padding, but that will like not need to happen. Like this:

image

Then you can put more text here… should act in this case like a nice horizontal rule. But by now you are seeing the possibilities of just a standard entry without using the entry icon at all.

Icon Entry; Size of Icon

OK, here is the deal. I have standardized the minimun size of the “Entry Icon” at 100px in width. Can you go more? Yes, but here is the reasoning why you would not want to do it. If you are the only person on the page with a wider image, it is going to look silly. Likewise, if you go smaller, the image will float and still fill up the minimum 100px. However, you could put more than one image there if you wish. There is no rule that limits you to one image. (remember that too many images will spread the entry out, too many images will look strange.)

The issue of going wider however then cuts into you space for your entry. Too large and you are going to break other things on the page and not just your entry. Remember you are part of a community, let’s all make this look nice.

This entry is a regular entry… but that does not mean that you can not add images to the text side of things…

image

So yeah, you could do some interesting things with this format. Remember that the maximum width is 350px when you put images on this side.

Could you put the text on the side of the icon and the icon on the side of the text? Yes you could, but it will not look very good... for one thing the title will be in the wrong place. If you want to do this, I suggest going it the standard entry, with the image places and floated on the right. You will have to stretch this, so a wide image will be required.

image

Also, since this field is not meant for text, you will have to specify the font type, and the centering. In this case I have right justified the text, I think it actually works to a degree, but I would not recomment it for general posts.

Also notice that the title of the entry is rather small and cramped.

Finally, this field is not parsed in any way, you you will have to enter the paragraph breaks yourself.
Icon Entry; Not this

Icon Entry; With Other HTML So, you can put images just about anywhere, and not only that you can put HTML just about anywhere too. Remember when you are doing complex HTML turn the formatting to "none", and be sure to do all your paragraph breaking yourself.

Image Sizes

Image Type Width MAX Width MIN Height
Standard Entry 450 n/a n/a
Icon Entry 100* 100 n/a
Icon Entry (Other) 350 n/a n/a
* Recommended

The overall useable size of the the blog entries is 450px. That means if you are using more than one image, where images are next to each other the width must not exceed 450px in order to render correctly.
